The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is set to update its National Port Plan for South Africa’s entire commercial ports system. Comprising some of the largest port terminals in the world, the aim of the plan is to ensure the national ports system is economically enabling and sustainably developed over the next 30 years.

Advisian’s Ports & Marine team, based in Cape Town, has built a global reputation for excellence in port and industrial master planning, and was awarded this strategic project by the TNPA. The scope consists of developing framework plans for nine existing and two proposed greenfield ports.

Deep domain knowledge backed by real-world experience

Advisian brings a wealth of capability and experience to the role, including mega-port design as well as expertise in LNG and liquid bulk terminals, which are relatively new considerations for several of the TNPA ports.

A key challenge of the assignment will be the multi-discipline and stakeholder engagement activities related to the strategic intent of the project. This is to ensure there is alignment between national policy, regional socioeconomic benefits and environmental responsiveness. To facilitate this, Professor Han Ligteringen was appointed as part of the expert panel guiding the team, along with Professor Trevor Jones to ensure local knowledge alignment.

‘Green Port’ sustainable development options are a critical component of the assignment. To ensure these considerations were included, Advisian also engaged globally recognized expert, Professor Tiedo Vellinga, as part of the overarching expert panel. Sustainability considerations also relate to TNPA’s transformation and skills development imperatives.

The assignment is now underway with the team recently completing a crucial interactive expert panel workshop, designed to ensure multidisciplinary and integrated alignment at the earliest stages of the project.
