Case Study

Bulk Loading Berth Two

Ship loader

The second Bulk Liquids Berth (BLB2) is a common-user facility comprising a jetty and working platform in Port Botany. It was constructed to handle hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids and gases that are transferred by pipeline to nearby storage and distribution facilities.

The situation

The second Bulk Liquids Berth (BLB2) is a common-user facility comprising a jetty and working platform in Port Botany. It was constructed to handle hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids and gases that are transferred by pipeline to nearby storage and distribution facilities. Advisian’s Fire and Safety consultants completed the detailed design for the loading berth, which included:

  • The design of a pumped foam proportioning and distribution system

  • Water curtain and sprinkler deluge systems

  • Elevated monitor tower enhancements

Our approach

Our consultants prepared the project drawings, documentation, design specifications and datasheets, and developed the engineering drawing (P&IDs) for all firefighting systems.

We also completed various safety studies, including consequence modelling, gas dispersion studies and HAZOP facilitation.  Specialist fire and safety construction support was provided throughout the two year construction phase to ensure compliance with the original design intent and facilitate site query resolution.

Results

Our consultants recommended enhancements to the firefighting, detection and alarm system design to align with industry best practice and increased service life. We were also involved in tender evaluation support, witness tests and onsite inspection and commissioning activities representing the Owner’s Engineer.

The project involved extensive consultation with the Port Authority, operations and emergency services personnel to ensure compliance with local and international fire codes and integration with the existing Bulk Loading Berth One standard operating procedures.
