The future of transport vehicles

When it comes to transport networks, Australia’s major cities will face significant challenges in the coming years. However, each of these challenges also presents an opportunity to transform current bus and metro vehicle transportation networks to both meet demand and improve commuter experiences. 

A technology roadmap that considers the trialling of and transition to electric, automated vehicles will be required, while also identifying the intermediate technologies that will enable the network to thrive in the medium term. 

Discussions on bus technologies also need to move beyond the drivetrain and driver to include all elements of bus design and the bus network as a whole. The greatest opportunities for improvement may be found not by a sweeping change to all buses everywhere, but by the strategic application of simple, existing technologies – like wider doors or improved interchanges – in the places where they can have maximum impact.
