Client Challenge
Vedanta was establishing itself into the bauxite, alumina and aluminum industry in India. Vedanta already had aluminum smelters and needed a local source of alumina supply, so decided to develop the nearby bauxite reserves and a 1.4Mtpa alumina refinery located in Lanjigarh, Odisha, India. They required an independent technology provider with proven refinery wide alumina expertise.
Solution
Vedanta engaged Advisian (WorleyParsons) to provide all refinery process know-how and concepts, refinery performance guarantee, basic engineering and commissioning support for the development of their greenfield alumina refinery. Advisian (WorleyParsons) collaborated on a very tight schedule with Vedanta and their implementation contractors.
Value Delivered
Due to initial bauxite supply difficulties Vedanta commissioned the refinery on just one of the two 0.7 Mtpa production trains. The single train achieved nameplate capacity within 10 months of first bauxite charge and produces consistently high quality SGA product. The design has shown robust acceptance to processing bauxites from various locations.
