Case Study

Pipeline spill response

oil spill

A product release of light-end, liquid petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) was reported from a pipeline in north AB.

Approach

We responded with a collaboration of engineering and environment aspects, including regulatory submission support. Advisian lead the pipeline failure investigation and engineered waste water and bio cell treatments. Our Liability Management and Remediation consultants handled all aspects of assessment, monitoring, containment and remediation.

Results

A surface water management plan was designed and delivered, including the containment of PHCs. Remediation options analysis and risk assessment plans were prepared:

  • Environmental services encompassed aquatic and terrestrial ecology services, including air monitoring, and liaison with regulators on behalf of our client.
  • Our aquatics team conducted regular surface water sampling to monitor the potential dispersion of contaminants.
  • The wildlife team prepared a management and long-term monitoring plan to reduce potential impacts on wildlife.
  • The vegetation team conducted ecological characterization of terrestrial and wetland resources towards the development of future reclamation activities.
