Environmental Management Services for Koeberg Nuclear Power Station

The Situation

The client required a robust environmental strategy in order to undertake various upgrade project the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

Approach

Advisian led the development of the project environmental strategy for Eskom’s power station. A gap and risk analysis was performed, followed by the development of a strategic plan for the proposed projects, including an Environmental Authorisation for the proposed construction of the transient storage facility. 

Advisian acted on behalf Eskom to perform the relevant environmental advisory services, including:

  • Development of the Terms of Reference for the procurement of an independent environmental assessment practitioner and subsequent project management of the practitioner appointed
  • Providing final environmental review of all environmental impact assessments and specialist reports
  • Support during the public participation process
  • Ongoing risk management including maintaining the project risk register and tracking

Results

Advisian’s understanding of the potential risks associated with the projects at Koeberg meant it was able to provide a detailed assessment of the environmental impacts which led to the environmental authorisation issuance by the National Department of Environmental Affairs with no appeals being raised against the decision.
